If you want to set up your laptop as a monitor you need to use the built-in features that allow your laptop to become a part of your desktop computer so that you’re able to use it properly.

How to Use a Laptop as a Monitor on Windows

First off, you need to prepare the laptop that you want to use as a monitor for your computer. Follow these easy steps for that

Preparing the Laptop for Configuration

Step 1: Open Settings option on your Laptop

Step 2: Click on the System Option

Step 3: Click on “Projecting this to PC”

Step 4: Turn on the system option to ‘Available Everywhere on Secured Networks’

Step 5: Choose your preferred options between ‘First Time Only’ or ‘Every time a connection is requested’

Step 6: Create a security pin to ensure the safety of your laptop and protect it from hackers.

Adding the Laptop on Computer as a Monitor

Step 1: Power on your Desktop Monitor.

Step 2: Press Windows Key + P

Step 3: A list of options would appear. Choose the option that you want your screen to be displayed as

Step 4: If you’re looking to add your laptop as a secondary monitor, choose the ‘Extend’ option

Step 5: Your laptop’s administrator name would appear under the list of available options to help you connect. Click on ‘Approve’ to connect the laptop with your PC as a monitor

More methods to use your laptop screen with your computer:

If you’re looking to have more than one screen option while also using your current desktop monitor screen, the Extend feature allows you to do that. Another way to achieve the same thing is through the Duplicate function which also allows you to view the same output on your display screen as the main monitor of your PC.

However, if you’re strictly looking to connect your laptop as the main monitor and disable the original monitor that is connected with the PC, you can click on the ‘Second Screen Only’ option.

Make sure to disconnect the second screen at the end of each session to avoid any ambiguities and confusion later on.

How to Use Laptop as a Monitor on Mac

On a Mac, it is considerably easier to attach the laptop screen as a monitor

Step 1: Navigate through the System Preferences on your Macintosh Computer

Step 2: Click on ‘Displays’ option

Step 3: Click on Detect Displays option. Sometimes the Mac OS automatically detects the new display which is being attached to the computer, if that happens don’t be alarmed and let it detect it.

Step 4: Click on ‘Arrangement’. Through that, you can transpose the displays according to the resolution that you want
